We're The New Sofia Pub Crawl. We've been showing travellers Sofia's nightlife every night since 2011, and we organise an annual New Year's Eve crawl. Last year we rang in the new year with 96 guests. Here's everything we've learned about where to be at midnight, what to book and how to get home.

If you don't mind the cold, join thousands of locals on the yellow-paved square in front of the National Gallery. Sofia Municipality puts on a free open-air concert with Bulgarian artists, and in recent years a light show has replaced the fireworks at midnight. Last year it started at 21:30. Plan your way home: last year the metro, trams and buses ran until 4:30 AM on 1 January.
Several of Sofia's clubs and concert halls host big ticketed parties on 31 December, with DJs, live acts and late finishes. Tickets go fast, so check Bilet.bg and Eventim.bg early. Places like CLWD event space, the Purgatory and Malkata Tekila organise larger events for the night.
If you are into electronic music and dancing all night, BLVKCAT and World Up are throwing their New Year Carnival 2027 on 31st of December. The event will be held at Pirotska 5, a modern event space in central Sofia. It's their third New Year's Eve party in a row: two halls, 11 Bulgarian and international artists across five music styles, art installations, food corners and carnival décor, running until 6 AM.
For a slower night, book a table in a mehana, a traditional Bulgarian tavern. Many put on a festive New Year's Eve menu with folk music. Book well ahead, because the good ones fill up weeks before.
On New Year's Eve, Bulgarian families bake banitsa, a flaky pastry filled with eggs and white cheese, and hide lucky charms inside: small folded notes with wishes for the year ahead, like health, love, travel or money. When the clock strikes twelve, don't be surprised if people join hands and start a horo, the Bulgarian line dance. Just jump in. Nobody minds if you learn the steps as you go.
On 1 January, St Vasil's Day, children tap their family and neighbours on the back with a survachka, a cornel branch decorated with popcorn, dried fruit and coloured thread, wishing them health and luck for the year.
