The 1994 World Cup is still the proudest chapter in Bulgarian football - and one of the great underdog stories the tournament has ever produced. Bulgaria had never made it past the group stage in any previous appearance. Nobody expected anything different.
They barely made it to the USA at all. Trailing France in Paris in the dying seconds of the final qualifier, needing a win to go through, Emil Kostadinov smashed the ball into the net in the 90th minute. France - Cantona, Deschamps, Desailly, Ginola - were out. Bulgaria were in. "God is Bulgarian!" the commentator famously screamed.
The team, coached by Dimitar Penev, was built around Hristo Stoichkov, then at his absolute peak at Barcelona. Their opening match was a 3–0 defeat to Nigeria. Same old story, it seemed. Then they took Greece apart 4–0, and suddenly everything felt different.
The match that grabbed the world's attention came against Argentina. Stoichkov broke the deadlock and Nasko Sirakov headed home in injury time. Bulgaria were into the knockouts for the first time ever. They beat Mexico on penalties in the round of 16, then knocked out Germany - Germany - in the quarter-finals with a Letchkov header that still gets replayed in living rooms across Bulgaria. Only Italy and Roberto Baggio stopped them reaching the final, a 2–1 loss in the semi, before a 4–0 defeat to Sweden in the third-place match. By then, it didn't really matter.
Stoichkov finished as joint Golden Boot winner with six goals and went on to take the Ballon d'Or that same year - still the only Bulgarian ever to do it. That summer, remembered here as "The Drunken Summer," gave people something to believe in together, in a decade darkened by poverty and upheaval.
